Free podcast episodes for architecture students and anyone exploring the path to becoming a licensed architect. These episodes cover the stuff architecture school doesn’t teach you, from career decisions and licensing to mindset and professional development.

Not every episode fits neatly into a single ARE exam division. These are the conversations about the bigger picture. Topics include:

How to become a licensed architect

The AXP experience requirement and NCARB certification

Career advice and professional development

Mindset, motivation, and overcoming procrastination

What to expect from architecture school and beyond

Whether you’re still in school, just graduated, or years into your career and finally getting serious about licensure, these episodes give you the honest perspective that nobody else is sharing.

No need to take notes while you listen. For many episodes, we’ve already made a free two-page set of study notes for you – just go to the episode page and grab them.

Ready to start your licensing journey? ARE Boot Camp is our 10-week coaching program with weekly live meetings, accountability, and support until you’re fully licensed. Or get access to all our self-paced courses with the ARE 101 Membership.

How do I become a licensed architect?

There are four steps: earn an accredited degree (B.Arch, M.Arch, or D.Arch), complete the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) with approximately 3,000 hours of documented work, pass all six divisions of the ARE, and apply for your state license. Check out our complete guide to becoming an architect for the full breakdown.

When should I start studying for the ARE?

As soon as you’re eligible. Many candidates wait years after graduating to start, and every month of delay costs time, career opportunities, and earning potential. You can begin the AXP while still in school and start taking ARE exams as soon as your hours are approved by NCARB.

Is architecture school enough to pass the ARE?

No. Architecture school gives you the design foundation, but the ARE tests professional practice, construction administration, building codes, and project delivery at a level that school barely touches. That’s exactly why this podcast and our courses exist.
