Building Systems Podcasts

Black and white logo for the Architect Exam Podcast with bold text and a circular emblem in the word “Podcast.”

Free building systems podcast episodes designed to help you understand how mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, and acoustic systems work in buildings. Each episode breaks down the systems knowledge you need for the ARE and for real-world practice.

Building systems show up across three ARE exams – PA, PPD, and PDD – and they’re some of the most intimidating topics for candidates who haven’t worked with engineers on these systems. Topics include:

  • HVAC systems including VAV, VRF, fan coil units, and rooftop units
  • Plumbing systems and valve types
  • Fire sprinkler and fire protection systems
  • Building acoustics, STC ratings, and sound control
  • Heat transfer, ventilation strategies, and energy performance
  • Electrical and lighting systems

PA introduces building systems at the analysis level, PPD tests your ability to select and integrate systems into a design, and PDD tests how those systems get documented and coordinated. These episodes build the foundation you need across all three.

No need to take notes while you listen. For many episodes, we’ve already made a free two-page set of study notes for you – just go to the episode page and grab them.

Ready to go deeper? Check out our Mechanical Systems 101 course with 15+ hours of video lessons covering heat transfer fundamentals, HVAC system types, and ventilation strategies. Pair it with PPD 101 and PDD 101 for complete building systems exam coverage.

What building systems do I need to know for the ARE?

You need a working understanding of HVAC systems (how buildings get heated and cooled), plumbing systems (supply, waste, and venting), fire protection (sprinklers and standpipes), electrical distribution, lighting, and building acoustics. The ARE doesn’t expect you to design these systems, but you need to understand how they work, how they affect your design decisions, and how they get coordinated in construction documents.

Are building systems hard on the ARE?

Building systems feel harder than they are because most architecture programs don’t teach them well. The ARE tests your ability to select appropriate systems and understand how they integrate with architectural design, not your ability to size ductwork or calculate pipe loads. These podcast episodes break down each system in plain language so the concepts stick.

Where can I get free building systems study notes?

Many episodes include a free two-page set of study notes. Just go to the individual episode page, enter your email, and download them. No note-taking required – just listen.
