Building Codes Podcasts

Black and white logo for the Architect Exam Podcast with bold text and a circular emblem in the word “Podcast.”

Free building codes podcast episodes that help you understand the IBC and how to apply it in real projects. Each episode breaks down key concepts like occupancy classifications, construction types, and means of egress so you can navigate the International Building Code with confidence.

Building codes show up across three ARE exams – PA, PPD, and PDD – each from a different angle. Topics include:

  • Occupancy classifications and mixed-use buildings
  • Construction types (Type I through Type V)
  • Means of egress, travel distance, and exit requirements
  • Fire and life safety systems including fire-rated walls and fire separation
  • Building heights, areas, and allowable dimensions

Codes are one of the most heavily tested areas on the ARE. PA introduces code research at the programming level, PPD applies codes to design decisions, and PDD tests code compliance at the documentation and detail level. These episodes build the foundation you need across all three.

No need to take notes while you listen. For many episodes, we’ve already made a free two-page set of study notes for you – just go to the episode page and grab them.

What building codes do I need to know for the ARE?

Focus on the International Building Code (IBC). You need to understand occupancy classifications, construction types (Type I through V), means of egress, fire-resistance ratings, and building height and area limitations. These topics show up on PA, PPD, and PDD from different perspectives.

Which ARE exam tests building codes the most?

All three technical exams test building codes, but from different angles. PA tests your ability to identify relevant codes during programming. PPD tests how you apply codes to design decisions. PDD tests code compliance at the detail and documentation level. You can’t escape codes on the ARE.

Where can I get free building codes study notes?

Many episodes include a free two-page set of study notes. Just go to the individual episode page, enter your email, and download them. No note-taking required – just listen.
