CCCA 101 Frequently Asked Questions

We know you have questions. Below we’ve answered everything you need to know about CCCA 101, how the exam works, and how to pass it.

UNDERSTANDING THE CCCA CERTIFICATION

CCCA® stands for Certified Construction Contract Administrator.

It’s a CSI certification created and administered by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) that demonstrates your expertise in administering construction contracts throughout the project lifecycle.

Becoming CCCA® certified means you understand how to manage the documentation, communication, and processes that keep construction projects running smoothly from project initiation through closeout.

CCCA® builds on the foundational knowledge you learned earning your CDT®. While CDT® covers the entire project lifecycle from a big-picture perspective, CCCA® zooms into the contract administration piece and goes much deeper.

The CCCA® exam tests your understanding of construction contract administration across six knowledge domains:

  1. Project Records (23%) – Contract documents, submittals, logs, schedules, alternates, documentation systems, and payment applications.
  2. Project Initiation (14%) – Bidding process, constructability reviews, addenda, communication lines, subcontractor relationships, and administration procedures.
  3. Quality Assurance and Quality Control (23%) – Document discrepancies, submittal processing, substitutions, testing requirements, schedule of values, and progress payments.
  4. Site Visits and Observations (11%) – Project meetings, preconstruction conferences, periodic site visits, field conditions, and documentation.
  5. Claims and Disputes (14%) – Non-conforming work, change orders, claims, dispute resolution, and contract modifications.
  6. Project Closeout (15%) – Substantial completion, punch lists, certificates, closeout documents, record documents, and warranties.

Notice that Project Records and QA/QC make up 46% of the exam combined. Contract administration lives and dies by documentation and quality processes, so CSI weights these heavily.

CDT® gives you the big picture. CCCA® goes deep on construction contract administration.

Think of CDT® as your foundation. It covers the entire project lifecycle from conception through end of life, teaching you how all the pieces fit together and how all parties work together.

CCCA® assumes you already have that foundation and zooms into one critical piece: administering the construction contract. It goes much deeper into submittals, change orders, RFIs, site observations, claims, disputes, and closeout procedures.

You need CDT® knowledge before pursuing CCCA® certification.

The concepts layer on top of each other. CCCA® 101 assumes you already understand project delivery methods, roles and responsibilities, and basic contract administration from your CDT® studies.

Yes. Get your CDT® first.

CCCA® builds directly on CDT® knowledge. If you haven’t earned your CDT® certification yet, start there.

Our CCCA® exam prep course assumes you already have a solid foundation in project delivery from your CDT® studies. We’re building on that baseline, not teaching it from scratch.

If you need CDT® preparation, check out our CDT® 101 course first.

Anyone involved in administering construction contracts who wants to demonstrate expertise in this critical project function.

That includes:

  • Architects and engineers managing construction administration
  • Construction managers and project managers
  • Contractors and field engineers
  • Project engineers and field staff
  • Commissioning agents
  • Owner’s representatives
  • Construction attorneys
  • Anyone who handles submittals, RFIs, change orders, or closeout documentation

The CCCA® certification is valuable whether you’re on the design side, contractor side, or owner side. If you want to become a certified construction contract administrator, this credential proves your competency to employers and clients.

2.5 hours for 150 multiple-choice questions.

That gives you about 1 minute per question, which is enough time for most people to work through the exam and review flagged questions before submitting.

The exam is computer-based and administered at testing centers during CSI’s designated testing windows.

CSI offers CCCA® exams twice per year in spring and fall testing windows.

Spring 2026 schedule:

  • Early February to mid-May: Registration period
  • Mid-May to mid-June: Testing window
  • Mid-July 2026: Results released

You must register during the registration window, then choose your specific exam date within the testing window.

Here’s what trips people up: You can’t just study and take this exam whenever you want. You’re on CSI’s schedule. Plan accordingly and register early.

Visit csiresources.org and create an account.

Click on “Certifications” and find the CCCA® registration information. You’ll pay the exam fee directly to CSI (not to Young Architect).

After registering, CSI will contact you to schedule your specific exam date at a testing center.

Both CSI certifications are challenging, but very attainable with proper CCCA® exam prep.

CDT® covers all phases across the entire project lifecycle.

CCCA® dives much deeper into construction contract administration specifically.

If you earned your CDT®, you already have exposure to submittals, change orders, RFIs, and closeout procedures. CCCA® builds on that foundation with more detail and nuance.

The challenge isn’t that CCCA® is “harder.” It’s that you need to know contract administration processes at a more detailed level than CDT® required.

You can retake it in the next testing window.

CSI provides a diagnostic report showing which knowledge domains you struggled with. Use that feedback to focus your studying for the retake.

There’s no limit on how many times you can take the CCCA® exam. Register again for the next cycle and keep preparing.

Results typically take 6-8 weeks after the exam window closes.

CSI conducts a thorough scoring analysis after all candidates complete the exam. This includes evaluating individual questions and setting the passing score with subject matter experts.

You’ll be notified by email when your results are available.

No. The CCCA® is a closed-book exam.

You cannot use the Construction Contract Administration Practice Guide or any other materials during the test. Everything must come from your knowledge and understanding.

That’s why we focus on understanding concepts, not memorizing the CCAPG word-for-word. You need to know the material well enough to answer questions without references.

Yes. Experience helps, but the exam tests CSI’s way of doing things.

The way contract administration works in your office every day is not always the right answer on the CCCA® exam. Learning the proper way things are done, the CSI way, is how you’re going to be tested.

Your experience gives you context to understand concepts faster. But you still need to study how CSI defines and breaks down construction contract administration processes, even if you think you already know them.

Each CSI certification zooms into a different specialized area:

  • CDT® (Construction Documents Technologist) – The foundation. Covers the entire project lifecycle.
  • CCCA® (Certified Construction Contract Administrator) – Deep dive into contract administration.
  • CCS® (Certified Construction Specifier) – Deep dive into writing specifications.
  • CCPR™ (Certified Construction Product Representative) – Deep dive into product representation.

CDT® is the starting point. The other certifications build on that foundation and specialize in specific areas of the industry.

Start with the right CCCA® exam prep resources.

The Construction Contract Administration Practice Guide (CCAPG) is your primary study resource. It’s CSI’s official reference manual, and all exam questions are based on its content.

CCCA® 101 is designed to supplement your CCAPG study. Our course teaches you the concepts being tested so you get more value out of reading the CCAPG. We show you what matters, how to navigate the book efficiently, and help you understand the material rather than just memorizing hundreds of pages.

Combine the CCAPG with a structured exam prep course, practice questions, and consistent study habits. That’s the formula for passing.

$199 for access through the end of the testing cycle.

That’s a one-time payment. There are no recurring charges or hidden fees.

Anyone who has their CDT® certification and wants to earn their contract administrator certification to demonstrate expertise in construction contract administration.

That includes:

  • Architects and engineers handling construction administration
  • Construction managers and project managers
  • Contractors and field engineers
  • Project engineers and field staff

Important: CCCA® 101 assumes you already have your CDT® certification. If you don’t have your CDT® yet, start with CDT® 101 first. We build on that foundational knowledge throughout this course.

Yes.

CCCA® 101 builds directly on the foundational knowledge you learned earning your CDT®. We assume you already understand project delivery methods, roles and responsibilities, and basic contract administration concepts.

If you haven’t earned your CDT® certification yet, get CDT® 101 first and pass that exam. Then come back for CCCA® 101.

It doesn’t make sense to skip CDT®. You’d be missing the baseline information that everything in CCCA® builds upon.

Because it will make you a better professional.

The information you learn studying for the CCCA® exam isn’t just for passing a test. This is knowledge you’ll apply to every single project you work on for the rest of your career.

Contract administration is where projects succeed or fail. Proper documentation, timely submittals, well-managed change orders, and smooth closeout procedures separate good projects from disasters. CCCA® certification proves you know how to keep projects on track.

You’ll become more confident at work. You’ll understand the proper processes for handling RFIs, processing submittals, managing claims, and executing closeout. You’ll speak with authority about contract administration because you actually understand how it’s supposed to work.

When your boss asks “How have you developed yourself professionally?” you’ll have tangible evidence. Earning your contract administrator certification demonstrates your knowledge and competency with construction contract administration.

This isn’t just about adding letters after your name. It’s about becoming a certified construction contract administrator who truly understands how to administer construction contracts effectively.

13+ hours of expert video instruction covering all 6 CCCA® Knowledge Domains tested on the exam.

You’ll get complete coverage of project records, project initiation, quality assurance and quality control, site visits and observations, claims and disputes, and project closeout.

Our practice questions aren’t just for testing yourself. They’re actually a teaching tool. You learn by reading the question, thinking through it, and choosing the right answer.

If you get it wrong, you correct your understanding in the moment. This active recall method helps the information stick way better than just passively reading the CCAPG.

The two 150-question mock exams will be published approximately 2 weeks before the testing window begins.

Until then, focus on the course content, practice questions, and flashcards. Master the material first, then use the mock exams to refine your test-taking ability right before your exam date.

You have access through the end of the testing cycle you purchase for.

Your access ends after the testing cycle expires. CCCA® 101 is sold per cycle, not as an ongoing membership.

No. CCCA® 101 access expires when the testing cycle ends.

No. CCCA® 101 was created by Young Architect Academy and is not affiliated, endorsed, or sponsored by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI).

Emily Hobbs and Michael Riscica created this course based on their experience passing the CCCA® exam and helping thousands of construction professionals pass licensing exams since 2013.

CSI administers the CCCA® certification exam. We provide the CCCA® exam prep to help you study for it.

Yes, absolutely. The CCAPG is CSI’s official reference manual and your primary study resource.

Think of it as your textbook and primary CCCA® study guide. The CCCA® exam questions are based directly on CCAPG content.

CCCA® 101 is not a replacement for studying the CCAPG. The CCCA® exam tests your knowledge of the Construction Contract Administration Practice Guide, not our course content.

The purpose of CCCA® 101 is to teach you the concepts being tested so you get more value out of studying the CCAPG. We show you what matters, how to navigate the book efficiently, and help you understand the material rather than just memorizing hundreds of pages.

You can purchase the CCAPG through CSI’s website. Make sure you get the most current edition.

Yes. We actually encourage you to use the course on your phone.

After you sign up, you can log in through the browser on your phone and everything works smoothly. We built the course platform to be fully mobile-responsive, so it adapts perfectly to your screen size whether you’re on a phone, tablet, or computer.

Watch videos during your commute and review practice questions during lunch. Study wherever works best for you.

No. We don’t offer a CCCA® Boot Camp.

For the Architect exam, we’re known for our popular ARE Boot Camp (a 10-week intensive coaching program). But for CSI certifications like CCCA®, we offer self-paced courses.

CCCA® 101 is self-paced. You study on your own schedule. There are no live coaching calls or weekly meetings.

The CCCA® is a manageable exam to study for and take. You just need to make time for it and show up and do the work. It doesn’t need a Boot Camp program like the ARE does.

They’re separate courses for separate CSI certifications.

CDT® 101 prepares you for the Construction Documents Technologist exam. It covers the entire project lifecycle and gives you foundational knowledge of project delivery.

CCCA® 101 prepares you for the Certified Construction Contract Administrator exam. It builds on your CDT® knowledge and goes deep into construction contract administration specifically.

You should complete CDT® 101 and earn your CDT® certification before starting CCCA® 101. The concepts layer on top of each other.

CCCA® STUDY STRATEGY & PREPARATION

Start as soon as you register for the exam. Time is your biggest advantage.

You don’t have to go 100 miles an hour on day one. Even baby steps for the first couple weeks help your brain wrap around the material.

Think of it like getting into shape. If you want to run a marathon, you don’t jump off the couch and run 18 miles. You’ll get hurt. You do a little bit at a time, and over time it gets easier.

Focus on being consistent. Slow and steady wins. If you start early and do something every single day, even just a little bit, it’s going to be so much easier when you get to test day.

Use the CCAPG as your primary CCCA® study guide and reference guide.

CCCA® 101 is a supplemental resource designed to make learning the concepts inside the CCAPG much easier and set you up for success when studying the CCAPG.

Good news: if it’s not in the CCAPG, you’re not going to be tested on it. Everything on the CCCA® exam comes from this book.

The book is organized around the six CCCA® domains: project records, project initiation, quality assurance and quality control, site visits and observations, claims and disputes, and project closeout.

CSI has their own vocabulary and terms you’ll see throughout. Use the CCAPG as a dictionary to look up definitions. The glossary is your friend.

Our course teaches you how to navigate the CCAPG efficiently rather than trying to memorize hundreds of pages. We show you what matters and where to find information quickly.

Yes, but strategically.

Going through CCCA® 101 is going to give you a lot of clarity about how to study the CCAPG.

Do it one domain at a time and use our course to supplement each domain.

Don’t just passively read. Engage with the material. Mark what’s unfamiliar. Focus extra attention on concepts that are new to you or contradict what you thought you knew.

If you already know something, skim and move on. If it’s new, dig deeper.

You might be familiar with a lot of this information from work. In that case, make sure your existing knowledge aligns with what is being taught. If so, you can skim and review what’s already familiar and focus your energy on new concepts.

But here’s the key: forget what you think you know.

The way contract administration is done in your office every day is not always the right answer on the CCCA® exam. Learning the proper way things are done, the CSI way, is how you’re going to be tested.

Study how CSI defines and breaks down concepts, even if you think you already understand them.

Yes. Experience helps, but it can also work against you.

Here’s the thing: the way your office handles submittals, change orders, or closeout might not match how CSI says it should be done.

Your experience gives you context to understand concepts faster. But you might also have habits and assumptions that don’t align with CSI’s recommended practices.

The CCCA® tests best practices, not how your specific firm happens to do things.

Use your experience as a foundation, but stay open to learning the CSI way. Sometimes you’ll need to unlearn what you think you know.

Practice questions are critical. They help you recall information so you truly learn it.

We’ve included 300+ CCCA® practice questions in CCCA® 101 specifically to support recalling important information. This isn’t just about memorizing, it’s about understanding.

Our questions are deliberately challenging, even harder than the actual exam. We wrote them to force you to use your brain and really understand the content.

When you take the real CCCA® exam, you’ll think “These questions are so straightforward” compared to what you practiced.

Take the mock exams about one week before your test date. Those two 150-question practice exams help you refine your testing ability and build confidence going into test day.

No.

We don’t recommend “memorizing” contracts. That just sounds exhausting.

Instead, focus on learning the concepts and the theory of what the contract says, so it could be applied to situations and scenarios.

Thinking about it this way feels a lot more manageable.

CCCA® focuses heavily on General Conditions (the A201 and EJCDC C-700). You need to understand what’s in these documents, how they govern contract administration, and how they define relationships and responsibilities.

Focus on the big picture: What do these contracts govern? How do they define the processes for submittals, changes, claims, and closeout? When would you reference them versus other project documents?

You don’t need to know specific article numbers or quote contract language.

Try to connect every concept to real projects.

Contract administration isn’t theoretical. It’s what happens every day on job sites and in project offices.

Always ask yourself: how does this information apply to actual projects?

For example, to properly understand the submittal review process, picture it happening. Who initiates? Who reviews? What are the possible outcomes? What documentation gets created?

The more you can reconnect material to real projects, the easier the information sticks.

That’s why our course includes real-world scenarios and practical applications, not just lecture-style presentations of definitions.

CCCA® actually helps your architect registration exam preparation.

There’s significant content overlap, especially with PcM, PjM, and CE. Understanding contract administration, submittals, change orders, and closeout once makes both CCCA® and ARE exams easier.

The CCCA® gives you a different perspective too. ARE exams focus on the architect’s decisions. CCCA® teaches you how ALL parties work together during construction, which makes you better at answering ARE questions about coordination and project management.

We use the CCAPG as one of the required textbooks in ARE Boot Camp for CE. It does an excellent job explaining construction contract administration.

Connect it to becoming a better professional, not just passing a test.

Once you get past the hurdles of finding time to study, the information you’re learning is absolutely fascinating. This knowledge helps you succeed in your career.

What you learn earning CCCA® certification comes up on every single project you’ll ever work on. This isn’t like some certifications where you might never use the knowledge. Contract administration is happening constantly on every project.

The sooner you convince yourself this is actually fun and valuable, that you NEED this knowledge to succeed, the easier it becomes to show up and do the work.

Use this as an opportunity to become a better professional, not just pass a test.

Absolutely. You’ll start seeing this information everywhere at work.

Many people tell us that while studying for CCCA®, they started recognizing concepts popping up in their day-to-day work. It made them more confident and allowed them to speak up more on job sites and in the office.

The confidence boost from studying often comes before you even take the exam. You’ll understand contract administration processes better, communicate more effectively with different disciplines, and contribute to projects in new ways.

You’re not just studying for a test. You’re building knowledge that makes you a more valuable construction professional in your role, regardless of what that role is.

Waiting too long to start or thinking they can cram everything into the week before the exam.

This information layers on top of itself. You need time for concepts to sink in and connect to each other.

Another mistake is only memorizing definitions without understanding how concepts apply to projects. You need both the what and the why.

Also, some people rely too heavily on old habits from their office instead of learning how CSI defines proper processes. The CCCA® tests best practices, not how your specific firm happens to do things.

Start early. Study consistently. Focus on understanding, not just memorizing.

As long as you need to learn the content and confidently show up to take the test.

Most students study for 4-8 weeks, but it depends on your experience with contract administration and how much you remember from your CDT® studies.

If you work in contract administration every day, you might need less time because you’ll recognize many concepts. Just make sure your experience aligns with CSI’s recommended practices.

If contract administration is newer to you, plan for more study time.

The key is consistency. Studying a little bit every day is more effective than cramming everything into the week before your exam.

Use the flashcards to lock in key terminology and definitions.

We’ve organized 180+ flashcards by domain so you can focus on specific areas or review everything.

Flashcards work best for quick recall of terms, definitions, and key concepts. They complement the video lessons and practice questions.

Don’t rely on flashcards alone. They’re great for memorizing terminology, but you also need to understand how concepts apply to real project scenarios. Use them alongside the full course content.

Remember why this matters for your career.

Construction is a competitive and rapidly changing industry. Why not get the advantage CCCA® certification can give you at any stage of your career?

CCCA® certification demonstrates competency in construction contract administration. It shows owners, architects, contractors, and consultants that you understand how to keep projects running smoothly.

When your boss asks “How have you developed yourself professionally?” you’ll have tangible evidence. When you’re working on a project, you’ll speak with confidence about processes and responsibilities.

Focus on being successful in your career. Passing the exam is a byproduct of that larger mindset. That makes showing up to study so much easier than treating it like an annoying chore.
